In the Custom Medical Devices: Device Design short course, we cover materials used for manufacturing implants and surgical cutting guides. With the fundamental knowledge of material properties, we can create effective devices for our patients.
Since the 1940's cobalt chrome alloys have been utalised in medical applications. Initially for dental purposes, and later for orthopaedic implants. Selective laser melting is increasingly used for manufacturing custom medical implants and cutting guides.
We have learned about the different materials and manufacturing technologies that impact our custom medical device designs. By combining all of this knowledge, we can write design instructions to ensure we create safe, and effective custom medical devices.

Our eyes are our extraordinary. They’re our bodies most highly developed sensory organs with more than 2 million moving parts. So, when the orbital floor or medial wall is damaged, it can hugely impact our quality of life.
Our goal is to correct conditions such as double vision. This means restoring the pre-injury shape of the orbit, to support the globe position, and to prevent herniation of the orbital structures into the maxillary sinuses.
In orbital floor reconstruction, ensure you use prominent landmark anatomy points that will help the implant to locate during surgery and to prevent the implant sliding along the orbital rim.
Check with your manufacturers guidelines about minimum wall thickness to ensure your design is suited to, and strong enough for additive manufacturing.
From thresholding correctly to using the uninjured orbital floor or medial wall as a template, we can construct a permanent, single use, custom, onlay implant to help restore globe positioning and function to the eye.
